International Conference of the Excellence Cluster at the University of Bayreuth

The University of Bayreuth's Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence is hosting its annual international conference from 14 to 16 May 2025. This year's topic, "Temporalities, Youth (Im)mobilities and Agencies: Africa on the Move," focuses on the perceptions of time and the dynamic nature of youth movements in Africa.

The Annual Cluster Conference brings together international scholars from the humanities and social ciences, media and literary studies, and political science. It will primarily feature participants from the four African Cluster Centers at the University of Lagos (Nigeria), Rhodes University, Makhanda in Grahamstown (South Africa), Université Joseph Ki-Zerbo in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), and Moi University in Eldoret (Kenya). The academic program will be complemented by artistic contributions, panel discussions with practitioners, and interactive workshops. The conference aims to create a space for creative encounters between research, art, and society.

The conference aims to explore the diverse forms of "mobility" and "temporality" among African youth. Temporality describes how time is perceived, how it exists in our consciousness, and how it structures events, actions, and experiences. Understanding the dynamics of youth movements and actions requires an analysis of lived experiences within changing spaces and timeframes. Therefore, the conference examines how social movements contribute to forming a new understanding of Africa. These movements offer a perspective to view Africa as a constantly evolving continent. This approach aims to decolonize and rethink Africa's historical path in a more inclusive and dynamic way.

A highlight of the conference will be the keynote lecture by Dr. Grace Adeniyi-Ogunyankin, an internationally renowned scholar from Queen's University, Canada. In her presentation, "The (Im)possibilities of Waiting: Precarity, Creativity & Embodied Youth Labour in Africa," Grace Adeniyi-Ogunyankin explores how African youth cope with uncertainty and economic challenges. She demonstrates that young people strategically use breaks in existing power structures to design alternative life paths with new forms of self-determination and future shaping beyond linear life courses. The keynote provides a valuable analytical lens to frame the entire conference discussion theoretically.

The Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence at the University of Bayreuth is one of the world's leading research institutions in the field of African Studies. In close collaboration with partner universities in Kenya, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and South Africa, the cluster investigates the diversity and dynamics of African lifeworlds in a global context.
