Uni Bayreuth: Where science meets courage and innovation.

In July 1970, the Bavarian state parliament decided to establish a new university in Bayreuth. The first lecture at the University of Bayreuth took place 50 years ago in the autumn. Since then, the university has become a cornerstone of Bavaria’s academic landscape, driving innovation and shaping the economy and society in Upper Franconia.

Today, it is one of Germany’s most dynamic smaller universities, attracting highly qualified researchers from around the world as well as students who enrich the city and region with their diversity. From its foundation, the University of Bayreuth has served as a driving force for science, business, and society in Upper Franconia, and today, it has also established itself as a national and international centre of excellence.

50 years of the University of Bayreuth

Thomas Ebersberger, Oberbürgermeister der Stadt Bayreuth
50 years of the University of Bayreuth also means 50 years of the university city of Bayreuth. Thanks to the continuous increase in the number of students over the past decades, the city has become more colorful, younger and more international. The city and “its” university have grown together, both are pulling in the same direction and pursuing the same goal, namely to advance Bayreuth, develop it further and make it fit for the future.
