With around 11,000 members, SIAM is the largest and most important international professional society in applied mathematics. Being named a SIAM Fellow is a significant honour within the mathematical community. SIAM awards this title to researchers who have made exceptional contributions to applied mathematics through their research, teaching, and scientific work. Now, the selection committee has named the University of Bayreuth’s Chair of Applied Mathematics Prof. Dr. Lars Grüne as a SIAM Fellow.
"The appointment is a great recognition of my research, and I am very pleased about it. This distinction motivates me to continue working on innovative solutions to real-world problems, as applied mathematics plays a key role in many current scientific and technological challenges – from sustainable energy generation to artificial intelligence," says Grüne.
Lars Grüne has been a Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Bayreuth since 2002. His research focuses on mathematical control and systems theory, particularly using methods from optimisation, numerical mathematics, and machine learning. Among other things, he develops and analyses mathematical techniques used for the efficient control of complex technical systems, such as intelligent power grids and combined gas and steam power plants.
