University of Bayreuth, Press Release No 182/13 December 2021
Covid rapid testing centre on campus
Starting on 14 December 2021, there will once again be a Bavarian Red Cross testing station on the campus of the University of Bayreuth. This is made possible by a student initiative that is committed to the fight against Covid together with the Bavarian Red Cross and the University of Bayreuth.
Since November 2020, there have been a range of opportunities directly on the campus of the University of Bayreuth to have oneself tested for or vaccinated against Covid. The latest of these offerings, a rapid testing station funded by the Ministry of Science and offered only to students, ended on 30 November 2021. Because committed students wanted to maintain the offer on campus, Moritz Schmidt (an Economics student at the University of Bayreuth) contacted the University Governing Board and the Bavarian Red Cross. "Tests are needed more and more often – for example, when taking advantage of University Sports – and so we wanted the offer to continue on campus," he explained. After that, things happened rather quickly: together with Dr. Reiner Hofmann (head of the project office of the Medical Campus Upper Franconia at the University of Bayreuth), who had already been responsible for the testing station on the university side, helpers were sought via social networks: "The response was impressive; within four days, 121 students had offered to put themselves at the service of society and help out at the BRK alongside their studies."
After collecting information and job interviews, the students were trained and are now employed by the BRK. "We will only have a small team on the campus itself," explains Schmidt. This is because the students are also needed in other testing stations and – if they have previous medical experience – also in the BRK's vaccination centre.
The rapid testing station on campus is now an official public testing centre, so it is open to everyone, and is not limited to students as it was before.
Opening hours of the testing station
Starting on 14 December, the testing station can be found in S3 of the SWO building. The opening hours are Monday to Friday, from 3:30 to 5:30 pm. Between 24 December and 9 January, the testing station will not be open due to the University's holiday closure. It has an initial capacity of 100 tests per day. Appointments are scheduled at https://meintest.brk.de and the communication of results is carried out via text message and e-mail.
